Steel Roof Battens
Top-hat steel battens for roofs and ceilings, roll-formed to a consistent profile for a true, even fixing line.
Steel Roof Battens Built for a True Finish
Battens are a small component with a big effect on finish quality. An inconsistent profile shows up in every ceiling line and roof sheet. Our steel roof battens and ceiling battens are roll-formed to tight tolerances for a true, reliable fixing surface.
- ✓Consistent top-hat profile, roof & ceiling grade
- ✓AZ150 corrosion protection
- ✓Straight fixing line for cleaner finishes
- ✓Supplied cut-to-length
Two Battens, Two Jobs
Our steel battens come in two profiles, each designed for where it sits in the build.
Steel Roof Batten Sizes & Specification
Every profile is roll-formed from G500 steel with an AZ150 zinc-aluminium coating. Steel roof batten sizes are selected to suit your roof covering, truss spacing and wind rating, while ceiling battens use a lighter profile suited to plasterboard.
| Section | Profile Height | Thickness | Grade | Coating | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roof Batten | [XX]mm | 0.55mm | G500 | AZ150 | Roof sheeting & tiles |
| Ceiling Batten | [XX]mm | 0.50mm | G500 | AZ150 | Plasterboard ceilings |
Steel Battens vs Timber Battens
The fixing line under your roof and ceiling decides how straight the finish looks. Here’s how they compare.
The Line Your Roof and Ceiling Follow
Roof sheeting and plasterboard follow whatever they’re fixed to. Metal roof battens that are twisted or inconsistent create visible ripples across the roof and wavy lines in the ceiling, which are expensive to fix once the roof is on.

Batten Questions, Answered
Generally, yes. "Metal roof battens" usually refers to coated steel top-hat battens, the same product under a different name. Ours are roll-formed from G500 steel with an AZ150 zinc-aluminium coating for long-term corrosion protection.
It depends on your roof covering, truss spacing and wind classification. As a general guide, deeper top-hat profiles are used on roofs and shallower ones on ceilings. Send us your roof plan and site address and we'll confirm the right size and spacing.
Spacing is set by your roof covering, the span between trusses and your wind rating. Tiled roofs need battens spaced to suit the tile, while metal sheeting usually allows wider spacing. Your roofing manufacturer's guide and your engineering set the final figure.
Yes. Steel battens are commonly fixed over timber trusses and rafters, including in renovations and re-roofs. Use screws designed for steel-to-timber fixing, and follow the fixing schedule for your wind classification.
Use self-drilling screws rated to AS 3566. Class 3 suits most sites, while Class 4 is recommended in severe coastal or industrial environments. The number of screws per connection depends on your wind rating, so follow the engineering for your site.
On some roofs, yes. The Building Code requires an R0.2 thermal break between metal roof sheeting and steel battens where there's no ceiling, or where the ceiling is fixed directly to those battens, as with some raked ceilings. Your designer or certifier will confirm what applies to your build.
Yes. Steel battens are widely used under concrete and terracotta tiles. Batten spacing must match the tile manufacturer's gauge, and the profile must suit the heavier load, so tell us you're using tiles when you enquire.
Our battens carry an AZ150 zinc-aluminium coating and sit protected under the roof covering. For sites close to the ocean, send us your address, and we'll confirm the right fixings for your exposure. Also keep copper and lead flashings from draining onto coated steel, as they cause corrosion.
Yes, and it's a common upgrade. Steel battens give the new roof a straight, termite-proof fixing line. Have your trusses or rafters checked first, and fix the new battens to suit your current wind rating.
Yes. We supply steel roof battens and ceiling battens on their own for new builds, re-roofs and renovations, or as part of a full frame package. Tell us the lengths and quantities you need, or send your plans and we'll work them out.
